The same Havertown, PA composite deck and stairs after soft washing, the boards clean and even

Wood is the surface where pressure does the most damage and shows it the longest. A deck cleaned with a wand held too close comes up bright for a week, then the crushed and lifted grain goes furry and gray and holds dirt worse than before it was touched. Fences are the same problem stood on end, and one of the fastest things on a property to go green.

Composite is not maintenance-free, it is maintenance-different

Composite boards do not rot, but the surface holds a fine mildew film in shade and a pollen crust in spring, and the embossed grain traps both. Composite also scars permanently under high pressure, and board manufacturers warn against it. It gets a soft wash and a brush, not a surface cleaner, as on this composite deck in Havertown.

Wood decks: chemistry first, pressure last

The gray on an untreated deck is degraded surface fiber and mildew. A wood-safe cleaner releases it and a controlled low-pressure rinse carries it away, following the grain rather than crossing it. The board is left smooth, which is exactly what a stain needs to soak into.

Deck restoration: cleaning, staining and sealing

Weathered gray wood is not ruined wood. Cleaning takes off the gray fiber and mildew. Once the boards have dried properly, a stain or sealer goes on to bring the color back and protect the wood from sun and water. Having one company do both means the wash is done with the finish in mind, and the drying time between the two is planned for you instead of guessed.

Furring: what too much pressure does to wood

When a narrow jet hits a wood board, it tears the soft grain out from between the harder growth rings. The board dries with a raised, fuzzy surface called furring, and that surface catches dirt and holds water much faster than smooth wood. It is the most common damage on decks that were cleaned badly before, and it usually takes sanding to fix. A wood-safe cleaner and a low-pressure rinse along the grain avoid it entirely.

Mold and mildew on decks and fences

The black spots on a shaded deck and the green on the side of a fence are organic growth, and they come off with the right solution and a gentle rinse. On composite the growth sits in the embossed grain, and on wood it settles into the weathered fibers. Killing it is what stops it coming back within weeks. As with siding, we clean the outside surfaces only, and we do not test for mold or make health claims.

Railings, stairs and the parts you touch

The deck boards get the attention, but the railings, the stair treads and the top of the handrail are the parts you touch. We clean them by hand along with the boards, balusters and post caps included, so the whole deck matches instead of a clean floor under a gray rail.

Spring and fall on a Delaware County deck

A spring cleaning clears the winter's growth and the pollen before deck season, and it is the right time to plan any staining once the weather is reliably dry. A fall cleaning clears the leaves and the summer's mildew before winter. A deck under heavy trees usually wants both.

Fences: both sides, or it is half a job

A fence has two faces, and you see one from the yard and the other from the street. We quote both faces unless you tell us otherwise. Vinyl greens with a surface algae film that a soft wash removes completely. Wood grays and gets the same wood-safe approach as a deck, with staining and sealing available once it is clean. The bottom rail takes the soil splash and mower throw, and it gets individual attention.

Worth Knowing

Do you stain and seal decks and fences?

Yes. We clean the wood, let it dry properly, then apply a stain or sealer to restore the color and protect it from sun and water. We talk through the finish with you before any of it goes on.

Good To Know

Deck & Fence Cleaning, answered.

How long after cleaning can a deck be stained?
Not the same day. The wood needs a couple of dry days so the moisture leaves the board, longer for dense hardwood, or the finish will not soak in properly. When we are doing both, we schedule the stain around the drying.
Can you clean my composite deck safely?
Yes, and it needs the gentler method rather than the stronger one. High pressure permanently scars composite decking and can void the board warranty, so composite gets a soft wash, agitation and a rinse.
Can composite decking be stained?
Most capped composite decking is not designed to take a stain, so composite gets cleaned rather than finished. Staining and sealing is for wood decks and wood fences.
Why does my deck turn gray?
Sun breaks down the surface fibers of the wood and mildew settles into them. The gray layer is weathered fiber, not the board itself. Cleaning removes it, and a stain or sealer slows it from coming back.
Do you clean both sides of the fence?
Yes, that is how we quote it by default. Cleaning one face and leaving the other is obvious from the street, and access to the neighbor's side is usually easy to arrange.
Can a wood fence be cleaned without damaging it?
Yes, with the same approach as a wood deck: a wood-safe cleaner to release the gray layer and a low-pressure rinse along the grain. High pressure on fence boards raises the grain and makes them hold dirt faster afterwards.
How often should a deck be cleaned and stained?
A yearly cleaning keeps mildew from taking hold. How often a stain needs renewing depends on the product and how much sun the deck gets, and deck boards wear faster than railings and fences. We will tell you what yours needs when we see it.
Is the black stuff on my deck mold?
It is usually mildew or algae, the organic growth that settles on shaded decks. A soft wash kills it and a gentle rinse takes it away. We clean the deck surface only, and we do not test for mold or make health claims.
Can you clean my vinyl fence?
Yes. Vinyl fences get a soft wash that removes the green film completely, and we clean both faces unless you tell us otherwise.
Can I book cleaning only and stain the deck myself?
Yes. A professional cleaning is the best preparation for staining. Let the wood dry for a couple of days before you apply anything, and follow the stain maker's instructions.
Do you repair or replace deck boards?
No. We clean and finish. If we find loose, split or rotted boards, we point them out before any staining so they can be fixed first.
Bundle It

Book it with the rest of the property.

Most of the cost of any visit is getting there and setting up, so adding surfaces to one booking costs far less than a second visit later.
