The canopy is the problem and the appeal
The old oaks and maples that make Brookline and Oakmont worth living on also keep the north and east elevations permanently damp. That is ideal conditions for the algae that feeds on siding, and it is why a Havertown twin can have one wall that looks fine and one that looks neglected. The shaded wall is not dirtier, it is alive, and it needs killing rather than rinsing.
Ninety-year-old concrete is not the same as new concrete
The original walkways on these blocks have an open, weathered surface with decades of organic soil down in the pores. It cleans up beautifully and it does not clean up to brilliant white, because that is not the color of ninety-year-old concrete. Anyone promising new-slab white on a 1930s Havertown walk has not seen one.
