Havertown is where much of the work in our portfolio was done, and it is also the town whose housing stock explains the most: streets of 1920s to 1950s stone-front twins under a mature tree canopy, with the original concrete walkways still in the ground.
The canopy is the problem and the appeal
The old oaks and maples that make Brookline and Oakmont worth living on also keep the north and east elevations permanently damp. That is ideal conditions for the algae that feeds on siding, and it is why a Havertown twin can have one wall that looks fine and one that looks neglected. The shaded wall is not dirtier, it is alive, and it needs killing rather than rinsing.
Ninety-year-old concrete is not the same as new concrete
The original walkways on these blocks have an open, weathered surface with decades of organic soil down in the pores. It cleans up beautifully and it does not clean up to brilliant white, because that is not the color of ninety-year-old concrete. Anyone promising new-slab white on a 1930s Havertown walk has not seen one.
Brick paver patios and composite decks
Behind the stone fronts, many Havertown yards have been updated with brick paver patios, composite decks with white rails and new walkways. Those are the surfaces where the wrong method does the most damage: composite scars under high pressure, and paver joints wash out when they are hit head on. The composite deck and the paver patio in our portfolio were both cleaned at low pressure, and the photos show how they came out.
White capes show their gutters
Havertown's white capes and colonials show gutter streaking more than darker houses, because black tiger stripes stand out on white aluminum. The white cape in our portfolio had the classic vertical striping and a heavy black line along the soffit. It came back bright with gutter brightening, which a house wash alone would not have done.

Havertown, in brief.
Havertown is not a borough or a township. It is the postal name, adopted on January 1, 1946, for most of Haverford Township, and it gathered up older neighborhoods that each had a name of their own: Bon Air, Brookline, Penfield, Beechwood, Llanerch, Manoa, Oakmont and Coopertown. The township goes back to 1681, when Welsh Quakers bought the land from William Penn, and it is named for Haverfordwest in Wales.
Most of the houses came much later, and they came with the trolley. The Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company began service in 1895, Llanerch grew into a busy trolley junction, and in 1897 twelve houses designed by the architect Frank Allison Hayes started one of the township's first planned neighborhoods there. After World War I, developments like Brookline Manor laid out regular streets along a broad boulevard. That is the Havertown most of our customers live in: stone-front twins and colonials from the 1920s to the 1950s, on streets lined with trees that are now very large.
Karakung Creek and Naylor's Run cut through the township, and Llanerch Park, Chatham Glen and the Haverford Reserve keep much of it green. Lovely to live near, and a big part of why so many Havertown walls and walkways stay damp.
Havertown borders Ardmore and Haverford to the north, Drexel Hill to the south across Township Line Road, and Broomall to the west, and it is a short drive from our base in Lansdowne along Darby Road, Eagle Road or Township Line Road.
